Appendix 7: s-k-l, arm, wing, articulation and secondarily axe. This base represents moving forms, thus relating to a kinetic base ð6.3.10.. The following bases are more or less "corrupt", having evolved further because of frequent usage and ancientness. The letter(s) in brackets indicate the lost letter. The extreme corruption of the name for "bird" in the Romance languages when going from South to North indicates a southern origin (Sic. axilla, ascilla, Ital. uccello, Franç. ouzel, oiseau, uzé etc.). It is ironic that this word, apparently originating in southern Italy, is not attested in Latin. The Latin (literary) word for "bird" is avis, an Iberian borrowing. The following bases are often found in the names of rivers, which, before road construction, would serve as axes of passage, either along dry river beds or by navigation. The names of the toponyms followed a parallel evolution to that of the names for axe, wing, eagle and bird.
