Engl. British Storm Petrel.- storm petrel Rye, pittil Scot., patie, pettie Ayr., stormy peterel Nhb., little petrel, little peter; any association of these terms to St.Peter walking on the water must be dismissed as the product of the imagination of some learned etymologist. A derivation from pitter-patter cannot apply. The definition of pitter-patter is "to beat continuously with light rapid strokes, to palpitate; the act of walking with a quick, short step". None of these actions are characteristic of the petrels which only occasionally skim the water with their dangling feet. For an acoustic origin of these names ð5.22.1..- martinoil Ire.: Galway. oily-mootie Sandness, Foula, allamotti, almouti, allamoth, allanmoth, mootie, mitty, mitey, mittey Ork., alamoutie (not alamontie),ala-mootie, bootie Shetl.; according to Lockwood, 1971: 58, the first element alla is cognate to ON ala "feed, rear, fatten". A connection to oil appears more likely, the very fat nestlings having possibly been exploited for their fat. Cf. also the name martin-oil. The second element mootie is cognate to Norw. mutt "little thing or young creature" (Lockwood); cf. Swed. blika-mutta Goldeneye, 54, and allamutta "female Long-tailed Duck", 59 and ð4.7.8.3..- spency, spencie Ork., Shetl., spence, Shetl., Nhb., spency (not speney),spenny Shetl., pinnick Scilly I. ð6.3.14..- swallow Shetl., sea-swallow ð6.2.3..- witch, water-witch, witch-storm (-), tom-sailor e.Angl., Nrf. (not tailor),dirridu Shetl., cf. Isl. drudi and ð6.3.2..- mother carey's chicken by seamen; the usual explanation that mothercarey is a corruption of church latin matercara is sheer fantasy born in the mind of someone who knew latin, and not in the imagination of sailors; carey is acoustic in origin ð5.2.14..- Its association to Mother Carey was suggested to seamen by the circumstance that she apparently was well-known in their folklore: "Mother Carew was an old witch... good at raising the wind...The sailors will not shoot them (the petrels) on any account; they pay them great respect, that their mother's wrath may be roused" McTaggart, ThreeyearsinCanada..., London, 1829.
