Bombycilla is an artificial name formed with bombyx and a suffix -illa, and not "cilla" tail, a non-existent word. The whole plumage is silky, not only the tail. Germ. seidenschwanz, franç. queue-de-soie and ital. coa-de-seda are improper bookish translations of bombycilla. McLeod, 1954: 35 explains the origin of the mistaken translation of Motacilla: "A curious misapprehension has grown among ornithologists who have imagined that cilla is L.[atin] for 'tail' and have even invented new names on that supposition, e.g. albicilla... and Bombycilla... The misapprehension dates back at least to the fourteenth centura, for Gaza translated phoiníkouros, Aristotle's name for a redstart, by ruticilla;phoiníkouros is derived from phoinix, crimson, and oura, tail; the first part of ruticilla comes from rutilus, red; so cilla was obviously taken by Gaza to mean "tail". The origin of the misapprehension is to be found in a failure to understand Varro's explanation of the name motacilla. He said that the bird is always moving its tail (caudam); and this clearly gave rise to the idea that as mota, the first part of the name, meant "moving", cilla, the second part of the name meant "tail". It is obvious, however that if there had been such a word as cilla, Varro would have said in his explanation of motacilla that the bird moves its cilla, not its cauda".
