Le trait le plus frappant du Fou de Bassan est son plongeon spectaculaire du haut des airs. Alcatraz a également été donné par les marins ibériques à des espèces tropicales et a passé dans le vocabulaire des marins anglais sous la forme albatross; après une confusion d'espèces, le mot est retourné sur le continent comme nom de ces grands oiseaux pélagiques du genre Diomedea devenus légendaires, s'est propagé par voie littéraire pour revenir en Espagne, en modernisme, comme albátros (accentué ainsi, correctement semble-t-il, selon les dictionnaires, ou albatrós par les ornithologues espagnols); sangano Gal., singüeiro Gal.: Becerreá, Limia (v. basque sanga),patoula Gal., patu marinu Sant.
